Gervais Tapped as 2009 Oscar Host
British comedian Ricky Gervais, who created the much-beloved TV shows, Extras and the original version of The Office, has reportedly been named as the 2009 host of the Academy Awards.
Several gossip sources say that Oscar bosses Laurence Mark and Bill Condon were impressed with Gervais's performance at the Emmy Awards (when he attempted to take back his 2007 Emmy award from The Office star, Steve Carrell).
And now, the bosses of the Oscars would like for Gervais to audition for the role, which would certainly be his if he agreed to come in.
A source told EW.com that Los Angeles is behind the Reading-native (that's England, folks) hosting the show.
"The buzz around town is that Ricky should host the Oscars."
Previous hosts of the show include Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Stewart, Billy Crystal and Steve Martin.
