Get Ready for the Extended Cut of 'Avatar'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox and James Cameron are discussing whether or not to re-release Avatar in theaters this summer with additional scenes.
Both parties believe that, even though Avatar has broken records and is, the highest-grossing movie of all time, they could have made even more money if they could have kept the film in Digital and IMAX 3D screens taken by Disney's Alice in Wonderland.
IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond said in a Gabelli & Co. investor conference last week that Cameron had about 40 minutes of additional footage that was not in the theatrical cut. Additionally, Cameron said he had about 10-12 minutes of additional footage that the could cut into the movie relatively quickly. The one thing holding them back though is the fact that IMAX has a maximum run time of 170 minutes. The theatrical release was already 160 minutes.
The two scenes Cameron mentioned supposedly portray an initiation rite for Jake Sully and a native festival during which Tsu'tey gets drunk.
