G.I. Joe Triumphs in the Weekend Box Office

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra took in an estimated $56.2 million its' opening weekend.

These days, it seems like making a movie based on toys is getting more and more popular. The latest offering is the Hasbro toy figure, G.I. Joe whose movie, "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra" by Paramount Pictures won the weekend box office.

The movie made around $56.2 million this weekend domestically, according to studio estimates Sunday. It also took in $44.3 million overseas, making its worldwide total $100.5 million.

The movie seems to have pulled the box office out of its month-long slump. The sales are 22% up from the same weekend last year, when "The Dark Knight" was still reigning in the box office.

"GI Joe" stars Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans and Joseph Gordon-Levitt who team together in a world-wide military mission to take down corrupt arms dealers.

The critical consensus has been mixed at best, with most dubbing it a mindless but fun ride, which seems to be the point of the movie.
