Gibson to Produce Holocaust Film
After the surprise blockbuster The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson found himself in the center of controversy over the film's anti-Semitic undertones. Many claimed that the Passion attempted to pin the fault for the death of Christ on the Jewish people. Their claims were bolstered by the fact that Gibson's father, Hutton Gibson, is a known anti-Semite who believes that the Holocaust never existed.
The Anti-Defamation League warned that the film could fuel hatred, bigotry and anti-Semitism" before its release.
Perhaps Mel feels that after all that controversy he's got something to prove. ABC has recently confirmed that they are working with Gibson's production company on a television mini-series about the Holocaust called Flory, about a Jewish woman and her husband's attempts to escape Europe during the Second World War. Although the film will clearly show the effects on the Jewish people of the Holocaust, there are those who are still suspicious of Gibson's intentions. Rafael Medoff, director of the Wyman Institute for Holocaust studies in Pennsylvania says For him to be associated with this movie is cause for concern.
