Gmail Launches Inbox-Cleaning Service
Gmail has come up with a solution to help users sort large quantities of emails. The service is called Priority Inbox, and it will be rolled out at midnight ET Monday.
Previously, emails were organized by time, placing the most recent email on top, BNet.com reports. Priority Inbox will push users’ most important emails to the top of their inbox.
The technology used to created this new feature is similar to the one used to separate spam from no-spam emails. "It used to be people wanted to separate spam from not-spam. But now, the not-spam is of varying degrees of importance," Gmail product director Keith Coleman said.
At the beginning, emails will be sorted by algorithms based on the identity of the sender, key phrases on the message, or whether an email was sent to a group or to an individual.
Users will be able to personalize their Priority Inboxes by removing emails automatically pushed to the top and adding others they would like to prioritize. The more people use the system, the smarter it gets about what users like to prioritize or not.
