Golden Globe Nominations
It's nearly Golden Globes time, and it looks like Jamie Foxx might be the man of the year. The convincing actor received three acting nominations, including best lead actor in a musical or comedy for his performance as the late Ray Charles in "Ray," a supporting nomination for "Collateral," and a best actor in a TV movie or miniseries nod for "Redemption."
Foxx is the first person to receive three acting nominations in the same year. He got the call on the morning of his 37th birthday. "What a great way to start the day, with three birthday gifts," he told The Associated Press. "I am honored to be mentioned in the same categories with such tremendously talented actors."
"Sideways," a story of two aging men, led the cumulative Golden Globe nominations with seven nods. The film was nominated for best comedy or musical, lead actor in a comedy or musical (Paul Giamatti), supporting actor (Thomas Haden Church), supporting actress (Virginia Madsen), director (Alexander Payne) and screenplay (Payne and Jim Taylor).
Another flick to watch on awards night is "The Aviator," director Martin Scorsese's biography of Howard Hughes. The film has picked up a total of six nominations, including best drama, best actor in a drama (Leonardo DiCaprio), and best director. The best drama list also includes: "Closer," "Finding Neverland," "Hotel Rwanda," "Kinsey" and "Million Dollar Baby." The best comedy or musical nominees, in addition to "Sideways," are "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "The Incredibles," "Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera," and "Ray."
Unlike most award shows, the Globes doesn't forget about television shows. "Desperate Housewives" has been nominated for five awards, including three out of the five slots in the best actress category -- Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, and Teri Hatcher. It's also up for best TV comedy, along with "Arrested Development" (which won the Emmy in this category), "Sex and the City," "Will & Grace," and "Entourage."
The nominees for best TV drama are "24," "Deadwood," "Lost," "Nip/Tuck," and "The Sopranos."
The Golden Globes are handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a relatively small group -- about ninety members -- whose awards still have an influence on voting for other motion picture awards, according to CNN. The awards will air January 16, on NBC.
