Golden Globes Kick Off on Sunday
The 66th Golden Globe Awards kicked off tonight in sunny, 80-degree Southern California weather. The event is presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 90 reporters that cover show business for overseas outlets. According to the Associated Press, this event is a looser, more relaxed affair than the Academy Awards, which are scheduled to take place February 22. Tonight's ceremony will see celebrities share dinner and drinks, and the award nominations will serve as a barometer for next month's Oscar celebration.
Last year, the Golden Globes consisted of a press conference as celebrities boycotted the event in support of the Writers Guild's strike against producers. As a result, Steven Spielberg, who was scheduled to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement last year, will be given the honor this year.
