Google Buys Company For $625 Million
Google announced Monday it will be buying e-mail security specialist Postini Inc. for $625 million in an attempt to reassure large businesses that Google can be trusted to oversee e-mail systems and other secure applications.
In February Google began selling companies low cost software complete with e-mail, calendar, and word processing in hopes of reaching beyond the world of Internet search engines and ultimately enticing customers to seek an alternative to Microsoft.
Google is just one of the Internet companies offering free or low cost software applications that are hosted online so they don't have to be individually installed onto hard drives.
The acquisition of Postini will offer potential customers peace of mind when using Google applications by providing e-mail and instant messaging protection.
Postini represents Google's third largest purchase, following the $1.76 billion purchase of YouTube and the $3.1 billion acquisition of online advertising service DoubleClick Inc.
