Google Launches Unearthly Android Application

Google Sky Map to be featured exclusively on Android phones

If only Magellan had the Android phone.

The G1 and 3G, T-Mobile's two Android phones, are now the exclusively compatible mobiles of Google Sky Map, a free Android application.

Google Sky Map utilizes the phone's built in GPS, compass, date, and time to provide an up to date map of the starry night sky from the exact point the user is standing.

Google Sky Map allows users to locate stars, constellations, planets, and just about any object (yes comets and asteroids) in the sky. The application provides an optional grid on the phone screen that displays the name of all celestial objects visible to its user.

Like any good Google application should, a search feature is also available for the Google Sky Map. Typing in the name of an ethereal oddity will reveal its location, with blue and orange color-coded arrows pointing the user in the right direction. The application is a must have for all stargazers, explorers, and astronauts.
