Gorillaz Tweet the Sweet 'Stylo' Single
Hot off a Coachella headlining gig announcement, the self-produced and eagerly anticipated Gorillaz album, “Plastic Beach,” will be released March 9. “Stylo,” the album’s first single featuring Mos Def and Bobby Womack, will be available as a digital download January 26 and has been leaked onto the virtual world of the Internet. Something the band knows much about.
“If anyone's going to leak my single it'll be me!,” Murdoc Niccals tweeted. Gorillaz is the virtually realized band of Damon Albarn (Blur) and Jamie Hewlett. The animated band members consist of 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel.
Womack almost missed the opportunity to appear on the project, not being familiar with the most successful virtual band who gained entry into the Guinness Book of World Records as such. The blues-man told Rolling Stone, “They called me from London and said, ‘Man, we want to do something with you.”
“In the days when I would get loaded, I would have thought this was great. Now that I’m straight, I think I’m too square to know where they’re at. I kept listening and thought, ‘Damn, why do they want me?’ It’s all new to me. The only thing that convinced me was my daughter said, ‘Dad, you got to do this. They’re awesome.’ I said, ‘You’re hip to them?’”
The Gorillaz project rotates guest musicians and its third album features appearances by the Fall’s Mark E. Smith, Lou Reed, De La Soul, the Clash’s Mick Jones & Paul Simonon and Snoop Dogg.
Gorillaz will be the headliners on the final day of the three day Coachella festival taking place April 16-18 in Indio, Calif. Jay-Z and Muse join Gorillaz as headlining acts with an impressive lineup of over 130 bands set to perform, including Pavement, Vampire Weekend, Them Crooked Vultures, Public Image Limited, and MGMT.
