The Green Hornet Gets a New Kato

Taiwanese singer and actor Jay Chou will play Kato, a role made famous by Bruce Lee

In a move to parallel Bruce Lee, Taiwanese singer and actor Jay Chou will likewise take on the role that introduced the Chinese actor to American audiences: Kato in "The Green Hornet."

In the upcoming film about the green-costumed crime fighter, who is played by Seth Rogan, Chou will star opposite as the Hornet's sidekick who is proficient in martial arts.

"It's an overwhelming experience to take on a role made famous by Bruce Lee," said Chou in a statement.

Lee played Kato in the TV version of "The Green Hornet," a role which popularized martial arts in American pop culture and subsequently catapulted the actor into movie stardom both in China and America.

For his part, Chou made his beginnings as a singer. He has also already starred in a number of Chinese films.

"I won't try to be Bruce Lee's Kato," he said, "I will try to bring my own interpretation to the part."

The film will be released in 2010, and the script is co-written by Rogan.
