Green's "American Idiot" Day No. 1

Green Day, American idols with 'American Idiot' ?

Pop punk band Green Day finds themselves among the chart toppers this week with their first number one album on the U.S. pop charts. "American Idiot," the group's fifth studio set and first release in four years has proven that sometimes, oddly enough, the "American Idiot" does win.

The album, which the band calls a "punk-rock opera" sold 267,000 copies its first week in stores, marking the band's biggest week ever commercially, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Green Day entered the Billboard 200 chart at number four with 2000's "Warning," which sold 156,000 copies in the first week and boasts a tally of 1 million to do date. Collectively, the band has sold 14 million units since its 1989 debut for independent label Lookout, according to Reuters.
