'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: A prestigious surgeon visits Seattle Grace
Things are a bit tense because Dr. Webber is coming back to work for the first time since he was admitted to rehab, and he must go through tests to make sure that there’s no alcohol in his system which is understandably embarrassing for a doctor of his caliber. And it can’t help that Derek is his supervisor.
Derek walks in on Lexie waiting in Alex’s bed for him, and that issue can’t be ignored. Both Meredith and Christina caution “Little Grey” because they think that she’ll start to adopt feelings for Alex, who clearly isn’t ready to get involved in a serious relationship again.
Meanwhile, Mark is taking a different approach to their breakup and his daughter’s disappearance by hooking up with essentially every woman in the hospital that he can get his hands on. Apparently the old, immature Sloan is back.
Everyone is freaking out because Harper Avery, a legend in the medicine world, has been admitted to the hospital. In addition, we find out that Jackson Avery who recently transferred from Mercy West is the doctor’s grandson, a fact that he deliberately kept hidden.
Dr. Avery needs to be operated on, and obviously, he has a choice in who performs his surgery. He chooses Dr. Webber without knowing his situation, and Webber really can’t turn him down. Shepherd is especially nervous because Avery has asked to be awake during his procedure.
Meanwhile, Callie and Mark are working on a case of a woman who was in a car accident. Callie operates on her leg, but the real miracle is that Mark realizes that he can cure the woman’s deafness after they have examined her head after the crash. While performing this amazing procedure, Mark will stop at nothing to try to demean Alex since he has found out that Alex slept with Lexie.
Teddy, Christina, Arizona, and Lexie are on the case of a patient who is close to death. He survived cancer only to be hit with the fact that his lungs are failing, and he needs replacement lungs to survive. These lungs will be very hard to come by for him because he is in remission, and there’s a chance that the disease could come back which doesn’t really make him a top choice on the donor list.
After Webber performs the surgery on Avery with Meredith and his grandson scrubbing in, Avery has complications. They go back into the OR, but Derek puts his foot down on this surgery. Avery is not awake, and his grandson sits in the waiting room as is normal protocol. Webber thinks that he may have done something to cause the complication, but it turns out that Avery was just allergic to the stitches, stitches that he suggested that they use.
In an attempt to do something awesome since Avery is in the hospital, Christina saves lungs from a dead patient who is a donor. Earlier, Lexie suggested a type of lung recycling operation where the lungs of a person who has died can be salvaged and used for someone else. Christina miraculously gets the lungs in working order, but Teddy is furious that she went behind her back claiming that Christina’s motivation for surgery is clouding her judgment. However, they are shocked when it turns out so well. Since it is his last hope, their patient agrees to the procedure. After almost dying on the table, he pulls through to the surprise and delight of his sister who was devastated at the thought of losing him.
Meredith talks to Jackson about his relationship with his grandfather since she is no stranger to tense family relations. She tells him that he should go to the hospital in Massachusetts where his grandfather is holding a spot for him. She says that the opportunity to work with him should outweigh the annoyance.
As Mark attempts to apologize to Alex for his immature behavior, he catches him coming out of an on-call room with Lexie.
And to end, the women surgeons get together for a “girls night” and some batting practice.
