Grey's Anatomy - Stairway to Heaven
This episode is narrated by Denny. He basically contemplates the idea between heaven and hell. It's nighttime and Izzie is brushing her teeth. Denny is still around. Izzie tries to ignore Denny.
The prisoner continues to bash his head while Meredith ignores the signals. Sadie tries to tell Meredith to come help the prisoner. The nurses come in to help the prisoner, but Meredith tells Sadie not to help.
Izzie asks Denny why he's still here. He explains that he's here for her. She wants him to leave, but he continues telling her that he's here for her.
Alex walks in and explains to Bailey that Jackson is on top of the list. Bailey is still worried because his ammonia levels are rising. Bailey has a page and she walks to the prisoner's room. She wonders exactly why Derek wasn't paged, but it was the request of the prisoner. Meredith explains that he's a match for Jackson. The prisoner explains that he has the organs and is ready to die.
Lexie and Mark meet in the On-Call Room.
Meredith and Bailey discuss the situation. Bailey wants her to do what's best for the patient. She asks if Meredith paged Derek and Meredith asks if Bailey will page him. Bailey explains that she will do everything for Jackson and Meredith should do the same for her patient. They are not executioners.
Mark and Lexie have sex while the interns are outside. There is a big yelp and the interns scatter. Lexie is afraid that she bent his penis. He tells her to get Callie and she rushes out.
It's morning and Owen wakes up in Cristina's apartment. She walks out before he totally wakes up. He is in a daze.
Bailey instructs Alex and Izzie that they are in charge of Jackson for the whole day. There will be a lot that they have to do to make sure that Jackson stays alive. Denny tries to talk to her, but she doesn't respond. Bailey wants a response from her. The Chief talks to Bailey and wonders how much time there is left. There is about 16 hours and Arizona suggests a liver dialysis machine to give them more time. Bailey starts to get emotional because she fears that she will witness Jackson's death. Arizona thinks that she needs sleep. Bailey says she's good and Arizona walks away.
Derek and Meredith walk into one room and they start to kiss. Derek is happy because his mother liked Meredith. She walks out and looks at Bailey with concern.
Lexie talks to Callie about her page. She explains the situation. She broke his bone and Callie starts laughing thinking it was a joke. They rush over.
Cristina is in a medical closet when Owen notices her. He wants to apologize for last night. She says it's okay, but Owen knows that it's not. She tells him not to talk about it and walks out of the closet.
The prison inmate tells Meredith that it's getting harder to breathe. She asks him if she should page Derek and he asks her if he's her boyfriend. He realized that it's true. He mentions that all he thinks about are lemons. His grandfather thought that he smelled lemons before he died. The prisoner is sure that he doesn't want Derek.
The Chief talks to George. He wants George to look at all the patients with life support who are a match with Jackson. He reminds George that when talking to families, they can't pressure them to give organs.
Derek runs to Cristina and shows her his family ring. He wants to know if the ring will be good for Meredith, but Cristina doesn't feel right making an opinion. He tells her that Meredith will need someone to freak out to and that person is Cristina. He tells her that she must have something to freak out about too. Cristina glances over and sees Owen and she excuses herself from the conversation and walks away.
Izzie talks to Ms. Prescot and tells her to get some food. Izzie has some time to talk to Denny. He asks her if she believes in heaven. She guesses so. Denny considers that maybe he's in hell. He explains that he's still here for her. If Izzie chose Alex, why is Denny still here? Denny wants Izzie to be happy, but he can't leave. She doesn't know, but he wants her to figure it out.
Meredith looks at Cristina, but she has nothing to say. Cristina asks about the killer and Meredith says that it's covered. There's something that Cristina doesn't trust and she runs in to check the killer and sees the patient is in critical condition. Meredith asks her not to call Derek. The killer tells her that he doesn't want to die. Cristina immediately calls the doctors.
Izzie, Alex and Arizona work on Jackson. Denny tries to talk about travel but Izzie wants to shut him up. Arizona thinks that it's her, but Denny continues. She screams at Denny. Arizona looks confused and tells Izzie to take a break.
The interns talk about Mark's situation and after the other interns leave, Sadie tries to talk to Lexie. Lexie calls it no one's business.
Derek tells Cristina to prep the operating room. Derek tells Meredith that she should have called him. He tells her that he was manipulating her. He makes her go into the surgery.
Jackson is still having trouble and Arizona suggests a slight fix that won't do much. Bailey is in a daze during the whole situation. She walks out and sees the prison inmate going past.
At Callie's request, Owen takes a look at Mark and it definitely is a fracture. Owen suggests that he needs to fix the penis. Callie suggests that Owen do it. After some complaints, Mark agrees and Owen sets up an operating room. Lexie walks in trying to comfort Mark but he begs her to leave.
George runs to the Chief and explains that there may be a candidate that could be a match, but is not an organ donor. They are about to unplug him.
Bailey stands outside the prisoner's surgery. After a deep breath, Bailey walks into the surgery of the prisoner. She pleads for Derek to stop. Derek wants her to leave, but Bailey tries to beg with him that he will lose all his organs. Derek tells her that they all made an oath. Bailey doesn't want to listen to the oath. Derek says that they will do whatever she says. Bailey suggests that he continues.
The Chief talks to the wife of the life support patient because of the organs. The wife wants nothing to do with it. In tears, she has been a wreck the past two days. She tells the chief to go away.
Izzie and Alex try talking about Denny. Alex points out that even Bailey can't even stay in the room. The doctors have to be doctors in the hospital. Jackson's vitals start beeping and Arizona suggests more drips. That's all that she can do.
The prisoner is bleeding and Cristina suggests a drain of the blood. Derek tells her that it's up to Bailey. Everyone looks at Bailey and in tears she tells him to continue the operation. She walks out.
The Chief tries to talk to the wife again. He knows that she shouldn't think about the organs, but he pleads that he can't go to heaven with his body.
The interns watch Mark's surgery. They wonder who exactly it is, but Lexie tries to shut them up. Someone suggests that it's Lexie, but Sadie decides to take one for the team. She tells the rest that it's her.
Izzie corners Denny. Izzie thinks that maybe he's not dead. Denny tells her that he's still dead. He asks her to think like a scientist. Izzie explains hard facts, she can feel and see him. They both are in tears and she hugs him in fear.
Bailey walks into Jackson's room. Her mother wants her to stay by his side, but Bailey wants her to step away. Izzie comes in and brings the mom out.
The prisoner is sewn up. Meredith calls the surgery a waste. Derek explains that it's not a waste.
Izzie tries to explain to the mother that medical miracles happen. She wants to be with Jackson. Izzie explains that even if she's not in the room, she's here for Jackson. Izzie has an epiphany that Denny has said "I'm here for you" before. Alex tells the mom to go into the room. Bailey explains to her that she should hold him, because there is nothing left to do. The mother tells Jackson that it's okay to go. The Chief runs in and explains that there are organs. Jackson starts to crash.
The Chief quickly removes organs as Alex moves them to the other OR. George is outside comforting the car victim's wife and Jackson's mother. Bailey works on the surgery and Jackson starts crashing.
Izzie runs outside and finally realizes that Denny is here for her. He explains that he loved her and that maybe this is his heaven. Maybe this is her hell. Izzie screams at him to leave. Denny tells her that she gets to choose if he can leave. She tells him that in a choice between heaven and hell, she picks heaven. She tells him to go. Denny gives her a kiss and disappears.
The prisoner wakes up and talks to Meredith. He explains that he wanted to destroy her career. Meredith explains that he was scared and she would have been scared of death as well. He hopes to have a friendly face in the crowd when they kill him.
Cristina is outside in the hallway. Owen sits next to her and explains that he was gonna have a real romantic date. He asks her for another chance. Cristina tells him that he has big problems. He asks again and she agrees.
Mark lies in his bed and Lexie walks in. Although he wants her to leave, she decides not to move. She explains that someone is guarding the room and she proceeds to hold Mark.
The Chief talks to Bailey about the surgery. She is worried that Jackson won't wake up. Bailey tells the Chief that she crossed a line. The Chief explains that he did as well. Bailey starts to cry uncontrollably.
The prison inmate walks to his execution. He glances over and notices Meredith in the audience. She looks at him before he is tied down. He realized that his grandfather wasn't lying about smelling lemons before he dies. He looks at Meredith, and although she breaks her glance once, she looks at him until he passes.
Jackson starts to wake up. He asks for water and it amazes his mother and Bailey.
Meredith walks out of the prison and finds Derek. She walks to him and starts to cry in front of him. She explains that she wanted to show compassion and that's why she went. Derek comforts her. Cristina opens her apartment door. It's Derek and explains the situation with Meredith. Cristina walks into the car and the two talk. Derek waits outside on a bench.
