Grey's Anatomy - Sympathy for the Devil Recap
Arizona meets Bailey late and she wants to try to push Jackson up the donor list. Arizona is upset about waking her up late for chit-chat. Bailey is worried that Jackson is running out of time. Arizona warns her that everyone is running out of time and goes back to sleep.
Derek arrives late and the inmate is suffering from expanding brain contusions. The patient laughs about how he would be executed in five days. He laughs about the women and jell-o. He considers refusing surgery.
Mark and Lexie are in Meredith's house. Lexie drops the bomb that Derek's mother is coming. He feels even dirtier. He hears Meredith and friends downstairs and worries how he can get out.
Meredith is worried about the situation with Derek's mother showing up. She talks about how mothers love Izzie and other girls like Izzie. Izzie comes in after she finished cleaning another area of the house and hiding the alcohol. George mentions that the house still doesn't feel homey. Izzie wants something to fix, not just a concept, and Alex mentions the couch having pee on it. While the living room commotion continues, Mark sneaks out and bumps into Derek. He tries to play it off and wanders away.
Izzie tries to give tips to Meredith about dealing with mothers, while Denny makes snippy comments. Izzie suggests Meredith fix her hair. She puts her hair up in a pink ponytail. Cristina looks funny at her and Derek smirks as well.
The inmate doesn't care about his brain. He is okay with dying in the hospital. Derek makes Cristina and Meredith observe him so they can actually do the surgery.
Callie has a patient who had leg lengthening surgery in Asia. She takes a look and the legs are in horrible condition. Callie is shocked.
Jackson's mother is worried about his liver. Sadie tries to say something and Bailey corrects her. After talking to the mother, Bailey has a one on one with Sadie. She wants to make sure that Sadie follows the rules. Sadie thinks it's some sick joke from Bailey. Bailey's not kidding.
Meredith talks to the inmate. He talks to her about his childhood. He was beaten as a kid. Meredith wants to know if the story is true. He neither agrees nor denies it. Jackson bumps into the inmate and Jackson asks how he got the handcuffs. After lying, the inmate offers his liver and intestines.
Derek's mother arrives in the hospital. His mother talks to him about the hospital. She bumps into Mark and he wanders away without saying much. Meredith comes in and she is introduced to Derek's mother. In the distance Izzie, Denny, and Alex talk about the situation. Meredith does a pee-dance as she nervously talks to Derek's mom. Cristina walks in and asks Izzie why Meredith was looking and acting funny. Out of nowhere Owen walks by, mentions some medical things, and asks for a date. Cristina is a little verklempt and Izzie laughs at her.
Jackson wonders why the other man (the prisoner) can't just give him his organs. Bailey talks about how it's against the rules. Jackson's mother fights with the insurance and Jackson wants to give good news.
The inmate talks to Meredith about giving away his organs. He wants to save a life before he goes. Meredith still doesn't believe him.
Callie's patient has infections on his legs. Mark has come in and explained how the two inches of extension will be removed. The man talks about how short he is and how hard it is to be a short guy. The two inches would make a difference in his life.
Bailey talks to Arizona and tries to get another surgery for Jackson. Arizona wants to wait for the organs. Bailey flips on her. Alex tries to get between the two and tells the two to shut up. They have organs available.
On an airplane, Arizona and Alex fly to get organs. They talk about death on an airplane and then shift to talking about Izzie. Alex doesn't know what the future holds between the two.
The cafeteria. Cristina, Izzie, George, and Denny talk about the date with Owen. Cristina stops Izzie and they look over the cafeteria. Meredith is on another table with Derek's mother and Derek. She is flustered but mentions that her mother is dead and doesn't want to talk about her father. She gets up and leaves. Derek and his mother shift conversations to talking about treating a murderer.
Mark is eating alone and Lexie joins him. If they are in any relationship, she will be eating with him. Suddenly the other interns show up and Mark leaves. He bumps into Derek's mom and she knows that he's guilty of something. He mentions that he's sleeping with Meredith's sister. Lexie drinks a juice box as Derek's mother stares.
Jackson is excited about new organs. His mother is excited as well. Arizona and Alex show up at the other hospital and see that another child is the donor for Jackson.
The inmate makes fun of Meredith's hair and wants to know that he is still giving up his organs. He decides to ask Meredith if she would pick hanging or injection. She scientifically explains that hanging knocks you out and with injection you're numbed first before you die. It turns out that he is a match for Jackson.
Derek's mother looks at Lexie. Lexie asks her if she needs help. Derek's mom asks her if she is a good girl. She asks Lexie if she's had any sexual partners and if she had any legal problems. The answers are six and speeding ticket for going 12 over the speed limit. She then asks where the gift shop is and wanders off.
Callie and Mark do surgery on the legs and talk about pain and agony. He relates it to Lexie and he feels great about it. Callie talks about how she used to walk tall in the hospital. She lost inches from George and Hahn. She's worried about getting shorter.
Alex and Arizona talk on the airplane. She tries talking about valentines. Alex stops her and asks her why she doesn't seem fazed about removing a dead child's organs. Arizona stops him. She dreams about the coffins that the kids are in. She tells him to turn past the coffins and look forward.
Owen and Derek talk about the inmate. Derek's mom comes back from the gift shop and is introduced to Owen. He walks away in silence after she wants a story or two about Iraq. Cristina bumps into Owen with her finished paperwork she asks him a silly question that Izzie mentioned earlier, "What was your best surgery?" She feels stupid and walks away.
Bailey is given the honor to cut Jackson open. Sadie notices something. She tries to raise her hand but eventually has to call out to Bailey. She finds a spot in Jackson. Bailey sees it and panics.
The inmate is crashing. He tries to refuse. She is dazed and Derek has to take over. Meredith is stunned and can't move. Derek wants her to sign the doctor overwrite form and she is still too stunned to move. Cristina signs it and the two scrub for surgery.
Jackson is clotting and his organs can't be helped. Arizona mentions a temporary fix. There is nothing else that they can do and they go on.
Derek and Cristina work on the inmate about the surgery. They remove a piece of the brain from the top of the head.
Arizona and Bailey are scrubbing out. Bailey is upset and Arizona feels like she is broken into pieces. She just wants to fix as many pieces as possible.
Meredith and Cristina are in the same room. Instead of silence, Cristina turns to Meredith and calls the ponytail ridiculous and walks away. She takes the hair tie off.
Derek's mother thinks that Lexie is good for Mark. Even if she is young, Mark acts like a horny 15-year-old and Lexie is young. They fit, no matter how old Mark actually is.
Callie tells the patient that they had to shave off a quarter of leg. He gets angry. His brother talks about even if he is tall, he can't tell him because his brother is complaining about how he's short. The moral of this story is that it doesn't matter if you're short. You should accept who you are, Callie.
Derek's mother talks to Owen before he leaves. She offers an herb for sleeping and asks him if he sleeps. He says he sleeps fine and walks away.
Derek talks to the inmate and the inmate wonders about dying in the hospital. Derek shouts at the patient how the two aren't the same no matter what the patient thinks. He's not going to die in the hospital.
Derek's mother talks to Meredith. She's looking for Derek. Meredith truthfully talks to her. She admits to not being happy and bubbly. She admits to feeling bad about serial killers and being cloudy. Derek's mother walks away. Izzie saw the whole thing and she's stunned at the reaction.
In one room, Izzie and Denny talk. Izzie wants to meet his mother. She wants the whole dating thing to happen. She wants Denny alive. Izzie finally decides to break up with Denny.
Callie and Mark are in the elevator and she offers getting a drink. He rejects and goes to Lexie. Before he leaves, he offers her a message to walk tall.
Cristina's apartment. Cristina opens the door to a late Owen. He's also really drunk. He was so nervous that he drank. He promises that he will make it up. She tells him to take a shower. He runs to her bathroom, shocking Cristina (she hoped that he would leave and shower).
Derek's mother hands him a family heirloom: a ring. Derek is confused on how she read Meredith so well. She's not angry about her husband's death. She understands that although Derek is black and white, Meredith sees life in different situations.
Owen calls Cristina to the shower. He's fully clothed and soaked. He tells her about the best surgery he had. It was a bombing victim that he saved. He saved him by covering him with his body to stop the blood loss. The man recovered, sent a letter to Owen thanking him, but the guy shot himself. Cristina gets it and walks into the shower (fully clothed) and takes care of Owen.
Alex arrives in Izzie's room. He offers going to Iowa on vacation. Possibly to meet Alex's mother. Izzie kisses him in happiness and runs to grab a drink. Denny sits next to Alex and asks to talk. Alex doesn't answer.
Bailey walks away from Jackson. Meredith tells her to feel better, but Bailey needs all the help possible. Meredith enters the inmate's room and tells him not to hurt his head because there is no bone. She insinuates to the prisoner that bashing his head could save Jackson. The inmate immediately starts slamming his head into the bed frame.
