The Grudge Holds its Own at the Box Office

The American version of the Japanese horror takes the top spot at the box office.

Shark's Tale finally met its match this weekend with the release of "The Grudge" starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. The horror movie garnered $40 million on its opening weekend knocking the animated feature to second place after its three-week stint at number one. The DreamWorks' underwater animated feature still managed to add another $14 million to its box office account.

Richard Gere tangoed to third place this weekend with "Shall We Dance?" and "Friday Night Lights" remained a favorite coming in at number four. The marionette comedic adventure "Team America: World Police" welcomed the fifth place spot, showing a decline in sales, but the biggest upset probably had to be "Surviving Christmas" starring Ben Affleck which came in at a disappointing seventh place right below "Ladder 49" earning a lonely $4.5 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were the Jimmy Fallon comedy "Taxi" at number 8, "The Forgotten" at 9 and the existential comedy "I Heart Huckabees" at 10.
