Guy Ritchie Signs On to Direct New Sherlock Holmes Film

Preliminary release date for the film is 2010.

Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct Warner Bros.' riskier version of Sherlock Holmes, according to Variety.

Ritchie will also be involved with the rewrite of Tony Peckham's script, which is based on Lionel Wigram's soon-to-be released comic book with the same title as the film. Warner's preliminary date for the film's release is 2010.

The exact details are still very shaky regarding the characters and whether or not they'll be reinvented for the film, but executives at Warner have told Peckham and Ritchie that they would like to reinvent Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick, Dr. John H. Watson.

Variety has previously reported that Holmes would be more of a risk taker in the modern-day version, more eager to use his skills in boxing and swordsmanship.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle originally wrote about the adventures of Holmes and Watson, placing a great deal of emphasis not at the violence American cinema favors today, but rather intellectual luster along with deductive reasoning.
