Had Enough Repetitive American Radio?

Review of the French Pop Charts.

We’ve all heard the comment that American radio stations play the same music over and over again, so why not check out what’s popular on the European charts? More specifically, here’s a rundown on some of the most popular music in France.

While many American favorites like the Black Eyed Peas, Ke$ha, and Lady Gaga have strong fan bases in France, the country’s music charts also include music by French DJ David Guetta (whose hit “Sexy Chick” has also been popular in the United States), Christophe Maé, and Jena Lee, as well as other European hits such as Lily Allen’s “22” and “Stereo Love” by Edward Maya (featuring Vika Jigulina).

David Guetta’s “Sexy Chick”, a house mix that features Akon, has become a top single in both the United States and abroad, whereas his song “Memories”, which features Kid Cudi has also seen major success France. Warning: neither of Guetta’s hits are meant to hit an intellectual note, but they will make you want to get up and dance, so please listen to them accordingly.

The French do appreciate more than house music, which is evident with the popularity of Christophe Maé’s “Dingue, Dingue, Dingue”, an upbeat pop song about a fashionable topic: the end of a romantic relationship. Not far behind Christophe on the charts is Jena Lee with her somewhat melodramatic pop song “Je Me Perds” (I Lose Myself).

The top ten songs on the French charts also include an exotic dance song entitled “Stereo Love” by Romanian duo Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina, and a couple of compilations to promote aid for Haiti, which has colonial history with France.

Happy listening!
