Harry Potter Author Files A Lawsuit Against A Fan
According to The Associated Press, J.K. Rowling has filed a lawsuit against a Harry Potter fan for his attempt to publish a reference book he planned to call "Harry Potter Lexicon."
Steven Vander Ark is the editor of a fan-based Web site which features a collection of essays and reference material on the world of wizardry. The book he was trying to publish would have included material such as lists of spells and potions and a catalog of characters including magical creatures. Publishing company RDR Books agreed to produce Ark's version.
Rowling has stated that free, fan-based Web sites are acceptable to her but publishing a reference book would violate the copyrights she has been granted in the Potter stories. The author has also reported that she plans to publish her own Harry Potter encyclopedia.
The publication of Ark's lexicon was previously scheduled for Nov. 28, 2007 but has since been stopped because of the lawsuit.
