Hathaway Finally Speaks Out About Jailed Ex-Boyfriend
While Anne Hathaway (who is likely best known for her roles in The Devil Wears Prada and The Princess Diaries) was promoting Get Smart, news broke that her ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, had been arrested by the FBI.
Hathaway broke up with Follieri just days before he was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering in an alleged scam where he convinced investors that he had connections up through the Vatican. This is significant because he convinced the investors that he could get them properties in the United States that the Catholic Church didn't want, for cheap.
Anyways, Hathaway opens up to W magazine about her ex's arrest: "As soon as I found out about the arrest, I had to get on a plane to Mexico to do a press tour for Get Smart. And then I spent a week in shock at a friend's house. . . . I just started to cry because I thought, I don't have a life right now. And haven't for some time."
She went on to say that the biggest help throughout this whole ordeal was her friends and cast mates, especially Steve Carell, on Get Smart.
"It's a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden. But just as suddenly, my friends threw another rug back under me," Hathaway said. "Steve Carell stepped up for me during an interview when someone asked a question about it. He said, 'At some point you're going to have to talk about this time in your life. You don't have to do it this week. I'll take care of anything that comes your way.'"
At this point, Follieri is allegedly attempting to cut a deal with the feds. He is being held in custody in a New York prison because he was unable to post the $21 million bail set by the judge.
