Miyazaki’s next film: 'The Borrower Arrietty'

Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s next film, Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty), will be released July 17 in Japan with Studio Ghibli. Disney’s English dubbed release has yet to be announced. The film is inspired by Mary Norton’s series of novels The Borrowers, and there was a live action adaptation released in 1997 starring John Goodman and Hugh Laurie. The film is set in present day Japan and delves into the lives of the borrowers (the protagonist’s name is Arrietty) and their fledgling relationship with a human.

Miyazaki is best known for the films Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, and most recently, Ponyo. Miyazaki is only overseeing the production of the film and it is being directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the youngest person to direct a film for Studio Ghibli at the age of 36.
