HBO Rules Emmy Roost

TV's big night brought out a new crowd of winners.

Television's biggest night brought out TV's brightest stars and celebrated the best in TV acting for the year with long speeches, musical exit prompts, tears, a tribute to ended shows, a bevy of soft emerald green dresses and comments like "Look at the company I'm in here. And I'm so glad none of them won." (Elaine Stritch, of HBO's "Elaine Stritch at Liberty.")

Host Garry Shandling who insisted the show was "not about me," led the 56th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, which favored HBO with 124 nominations and 16 major awards.

The coveted best drama award went to HBO's "The Sopranos," which has seemingly gone unnoticed in the category for years. The HBO movie "Angels in America" also won best miniseries and tied a record with 11 Emmys.
