HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray War Still On

Blockbuster expands the Sony blu-ray rentals to other locations.

History shows that a media format can prevail and win the war over others. Laser-disk, VHS, 8-track, and cassette tapes are all media formats that have become almost obsolete because of the much better quality of CD's and DVD's. The media world is in a format-war of its own on the HD front. Sony's blu-ray disk player and Toshiba's HD-DVD player are fighting to see which will become the disk of choice. HD-DVD stand-alone consoles are selling more than the blu-ray consoles because they are more affordable. However all Sony PS3's are equipped with blu-ray technology, which automatically puts Sony as having over 1.5 million blu-ray players in circulation compared to the minuscule amount that HD-DVD has. Blockbuster devotes their shelf space to booth formats and will continue to serve customers demands. Blu-ray has been outselling HD-DVD, but that is because Sony has more movie studios support it. There are more titles available on blu-ray, so Blockbuster stocks more in that format. After a trial run of 250 stores that carry both blu-ray and HD-DVD they are expanding blu-ray to other locations. This proves nothing though, only that Sony has won this battle. Sony's player is still very expensive and if the HD-DVD prices become lower and more affordable for the average person the advantage gained by sheer numbers will dwindle overnight. So, status of the format-war: STILL ON.
