Heath Ledger's Last Film for Cannes Debut

The Cannes Film Festival adds Ledger's last film to its lineup after his posthumous Oscar for "The Dark Knight."

After much speculation and worry that Heath Ledger's last film would never be seen, the Cannes Film Festival announced that Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus will debut in the Festival on May 22, according to Contactmusic. The film joins Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Pixar's Up, also set to premiere in Cannes.

Terry Gilliam directed Ledger in his last work, and after the actor's sudden death, he enlisted the help of Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law to finish Ledger's role. Gilliam, who also co-wrote the screenplay, reimagined the story so the three stars could complete Ledger's starring part, and all three gave their incomes to Ledger's young daughter, Matilda.

Though the movie is still seeking distribution before it will be seen in the U.S., its France debut should help. Also starring Verne Troy, Tom Waits and Christopher Plummer, Imaginarium is a mythical tale of promises kept and broken. Gilliam first worked with Ledger on The Brothers Grimm in 2005.
