Heigl Rules Herself Out for Emmy Nod

In an unusual move, Heigl withdraws herself from Emmy contention.

Katherine Heigl, an actress of ABC's Grey's Anatomy and star of films including Knocked Up and 27 Dresses, has ruled herself out of contention for an Emmy nomination next month, the Washington Post reports.

After Los Angeles Times writer Tom O'Neil, author of The Emmys, found out Heigl wasn't on the list for prime-time Emmy contenders, he contacted her to find out why. She responded to O'Neil with this statement:

"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."

Heigl, who won an Emmy last year for her portrayal of Izzie Stevens of Grey's Anatomy, was surprised last year by the honor, after being told by her mother that she "didn't have a shot in hell in winning."

This is not the first time Heigl has taken a shot at her projects. She told Vanity Fair, in a December interview, that Knocked Up was "a little sexist," and that it portrayed women as "shrews, as humorless and uptight." She reportedly did not read the script before accepting the role.
