Highlights From The 2009 Tony Awards
Sunday night's 63rd annual Tony Awards was elaborate, energetic and over the top. The show kicked off with a musical number involving Dolly Parton, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, and the casts of "West Side Story," "Guys and Dolls," "Pal Joey," "Shrek," "9 to 5: The Musical," "Next to Normal," "Rock of Ages" and "Billy Elliot", and concluded with a rendition of "Let the Sun Shine" from "Hair."
However, everything did not run smoothly in the live broadcast from Radio Music Hall. "Reality of Love" reality star Bret Michaels who hit the stage with his band Poison along with Tony-nominated former American Idol Constantine Maroulis and the cast of Broadway's Rock of Ages ran into a piece of scenery when he missed his mark during the performance of the hit "Nothin' But a Good Time."
Michaels was knocked to the ground, and while the extent of his injury is unknown, he did not break his nose, contrary to reports that claimed he had.
The night was profitable for "Murder, She Wrote" star Angela Lansbury's, 83. She walked away with her fifth Tony award, and the audience applauded her with a standing ovation.
"This is amazing," Lansbury told the crowd, 83. "Who would have thought? Who knew at this time of my life that I would be presented with this lovely, lovely award. I can't believe I am standing here."
Liza Minnelli's concert, "Liza's at the Palace," beat out Will Ferrell's one-man show, "You're Welcome America. A Final Night with George W. Bush," for the win in the best special theatrical event category. In her acceptance speech, Minnelli thanked her famous parents, showbiz legends Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli.
Overall the night, hosted by "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris, was a huge success - aside from the minor accident involving reality star Bret Michaels.
