Hollywood Goes Plump

Hairspray shatters the Hollywood "thin" ideal.

It takes a lot to influence the stereotypes held by the standards of Hollywood. The images of the blond, skinny, and tan Barbie-doll figure that is pushed on society by the media is slowly being broken down by bigger beauties. With the feature film "Hairspray" dancing into theaters this week, newcomer Nikki Blonsky blows the typical image out of the water. The chubby 4-foot-10 actress is one in a line of unconventional looking actresses to hit the scene. "Growing up, all I saw were the really thin actors and pop singers of the world. Everybody was so thin and tall and blond and everything I was not," said Blonsky. "Do I have to be like them to make it into the business? I thought, 'No, I'm going to find a way to make it in just as somebody different." It seems that being healthy and more voluptuous is coming back into style, which is good. The new look mirrors old movie-star vixens, such as Marilyn Monroe, who is looked as one of the most beautiful women of all time. "Hairspray" also features Queen Latifah, who plays Motormouth Maybelle, a large woman proud to be who she is. Which is the main message in the movie.
