Hollywood Legend Kerr's Jewels Sell for Thousands

An auction of five of her pieces brings in astonishing sums.

Jewelry belonging to the late actress, Deborah Kerr, was sold for more than ú50,000 (over $70,000) at an auction in London yesterday.

Among the five items for sale were a three-stone diamond engagement ring from her first marriage to an RAF officer, which went for ú33,600 (nearly $50,000), and a gold and turquoise serpentine chain, which sold for ú5,760 (about $8,500), the BBC reports. An amethyst necklace, a 19th century diamond set ring and pearl and an emerald and diamond bracelet constituted the rest of the group.

All of the pieces far exceeded bidder expectations. The engagement ring was estimated to sell for only ú25,000, while the gold and turquoise chain went for almost twice its expected price, the UK paper, the Times, says.

Kerr starred in such classics as The King and I and From Here to Eternity. She was born and raised in Great Britain, passing away in England last year at the age of 86.
