Hollywood Looks to Haiti
Hollywood celebrities are at it again. With Haiti in utter turmoil after being rocked by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake this week, stars are opening their wallets to help the impoverished country rebuild. Singer Wyclef Jean, whose originally from Haiti, is one of the loudest voices calling for disaster relief. According to The New York Times, Give on the Go, the company working with Jean to raise money, announced today it has raised $750,000 so far for Haitian aid. The company’s ultimate goal is to raise $1 million per day.
The campaign, which the Times said began Tuesday evening, allows people to donate $5 to Jean’s Yéle Haiti Foundation through their mobile devices. Just text “Yele” to 501501; charges are applied later with 100 percent of the profits going toward Jean’s relief organization.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, ever the generous couple, are also getting involved. The duo pledged $1 million from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation to the Doctors Without Borders group responding to the Haitian disaster. Per the Times, Jolie said in a statement:
“It is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades.”
