Holmes to Hit Theatres

Actor Robert Downey Jr. took the stage at Comic-Con to talk about his role as Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming film of the same name.

The upcoming cinematic incarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories of master sleuth Sherlock Holmes has an all-star cast and an unconventional approach, at least in modern Hollywood. Robert Downey Jr., who plays Holmes himself, took the stage at Comic-Con to talk about the movie.

According to The L.A. Times, Downey Jr. told the audience, "We pretty much went back to the source. That's how we reinvigorated it, by changing it less than it has been."

In an age when book-to-movie adaptations stray as far as possible from the source material, a purist approach is a refreshing change. The cast all expressed reverence for Doyle's original work and the brilliant one-liners he wrote for his hero.

Downey Jr. told Screencrave.com, "I really do think Doyle was an amazing, amazing writer and story-teller, I didn't really quite know how great he was until we kept reaching out to find quotes and things he had said or descriptions he'd said or really more philosophical points of view that Doyle used through Sherlock Holmes."

"Sherlock Holmes," directed by Guy Ritchie, is set to hit theatres this Christmas, starring Downey Jr., Jude Law as Holmes' right-hand man Dr. Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Holmes' love interest Irene Adler.
