Homer Simpson Named Greatest TV Character

An Entertainment Weekly survey named Homer Simpson as the greatest character in television and film

According to an Entertainment Weekly survey, Homer Simpson has been named the greatest TV and film character. Readers voted on fictional characters who were created within the last 20 years.

Creator Matt Groening said Homer’s mass appeal is “because we’re all secretly propelled by desires we can’t admit to.” For this reason, the Simpsons character offers something to which viewers can relate.

Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter secured the second spot in the poll, followed by Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy from the titular 90s TV show. Tony Soprano of HBO’s The Sopranos was ranked fourth, to be followed by Heath Ledger’s posthumous Oscar winning performance of The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Other characters who were voted into the Top 10 included Rachel from Friends, Johnny Depp’s Edward Scissorhands, Carrie from Sex and the City, Hannibal Lector, and the Nickelodeon cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants.
