In terrible times of disaster it is important for the people of the world to come together as one. The devastating situation that resulted from Haiti's recent earthquake proved to be no different. Friday's broadcast of "Hope for Haiti Now" was undoubtedly a success. With a whopping $58 million dollars, the current amount raised does not include donations from corporations or large private donors.
During the telethon, celebrities brought awareness to the devastation and the public answered. In the broadcast, L.A. host George Clooney said, "The Haitian people need our help. They need to know they are not alone. They need to know that we still care."
Haitian-born music producer and rapper Wyclef Jean hosted the event in New York City while CNN's Anderson Cooper reported from Haiti.
Besides celebrity appearances including Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman, the night featured performances by several musicians from around the world. Some of the talent included Madonna, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, and Keith Urban.
The Hope for Haiti Now album, a compilation of the telethon's musical performances is available on Apple's iTunes. It is currently the No. 1 album in 18 countries.
Even though the broadcast is over, people will be still be able to donate to "Hope for Haiti Now" during the next six months via text messaging, phone, mail and the Web.
