Playboy founder Hugh Hefner claimed on his Twitter account that the new issue of the magazine that features Lindsay Lohan is breaking sales records for his magazine. Another report supports his statement, saying that the issue has been a boost to both print and online sales.
Hefner wrote on Twitter that “The Lindsay Lohan January-February Double Issue is breaking sales records.” Hefner ended up having to release the issue early after the cover leaked.
To add credibility to Hefner’s statement, sources told TMZ that they have received multiple re-orders from newsstands in New York, Los Angeles and other major cities. Sources also said that the number of subscriptions to iPlayboy.com, the magazine’s online service, have spiked since the issue’s release.
However, there are a few reports showing that Hefner and the sources may be a little over confident. CNN reports that after calling several newsstands in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago and New York, only one had actually sold out of the issue. Fox News reports that they went to gas stations and newsstands between New York and Philadelphia on Friday and none had actually sold out. Several even told the site that that “No one has bought it.”
Playboy reportedly paid Lohan $1 million for the shoot, which is inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s photo shoot that was featured in the first issue in 1953. Part of the promotion for the issue was supposed to be Lohan’s interview with Ellen DeGeneres, but Lohan pulled out and the cover photo was leaked early.
Lohan’s movie career has stalled, thanks to 2007 drunk-driving convictions, a 2011 necklace theft conviction and probation violations.
