Hugh Jackman to Host the Oscars
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that Hugh Jackman will host the 81st annual Oscars, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Jackman boasts previous hosting experience at the Tony Awards. He won an Emmy in 2004 for hosting the 59th annual ceremony, and was also nominated in 2005 for hosting the theater awards show.
The selection of Jackman is a drastic departure from the Academy's most recent comedic hosts, including Jon Stewart in 2008 and 2006 and Ellen DeGeneres in 2007. Chris Rock, Steve Martin, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg have also graced the Oscar stage in recent years.
It appears that the Academy is trying for an all new look and feel to this year's ceremony with new producers, a new set director and a new music director on board.
The Oscars will be telecast on February 22. Nominations will be announced January 22.
