Hugo screenwriter John Logan has been hired to write the screenplay for a film adaptation of the hit Broadway show, Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.
Entertainment Weekly reports that the two-time Oscar nominee was hired by Hugo’s co-producers, Graham King and Tim Headington to write the film.
King and Headington’s GK Films acquired the rights to the show back in October 2010, according to Variety. They plan to use most of the songs used in the show, which includes classic Four Seasons hits like “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Sherry” and “Oh What A Night.” Executive producers on the film include Frankie Valli and Four Seasons keyboardist Bob Gaudio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jersey Boys has been a hit since it opened, winning four Tonys in 2006 and generating over $1 billion in worldwide sales. The show was written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with Gaudio writing additional music and lyrics by Bob Crewe.
Columbia Pictures is expected to be GK’s partner to handle worldwide distribution, although GK may choose to sell other international markets to other studios.
Logan’s profile has never been higher. He was nominated for an Oscar for his scripts for Gladiator and The Aviator. In 2011, he wrote scripts for Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, Ralph Fiennes’ Coriolanus and the Johnny Depp animated film Rango. He is also writing the script to the next James Bond film, Skyfall. Logan’s Broadway experience includes Red, which won several Tonys in 2010. He also scripted Tim Burton’s film adaptation of the musical Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
