Sad news, faux-news fans. Media hub Hulu.com has lost its rights to host Comedy Central's two most popular shows, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report thanks to the digital media distributor and Viacom not being able to come to an agreement over prices.
Hulu's SVP of Content and Distribution, Andy Forssell, made the announcement through the company blog, and stated his regret over the disagreement that took the shows off their site. "The team at Comedy Central have been great partners for us, and our users have been extremely vocal and passionate about how much they love what the Comedy Central folks are doing."
Viacom is also pulling its other Comedy Central shows from the site's offerings, including Crank Yankers, Drawn Together, and Mind of Mencia. (Many of you may be thankful for that last one.)
The New York Times quoted an anonymous source involved in the negotiations as saying, "We tried to reach a deal. We got close. We continued to talk even over the weekend. But we could not agree on a price."
Fans of the shows who don't have cable can continue to watch full episodes of these shows at their respective sites, which Forssell encouraged Hulu viewers to visit to continue their support of the pulled series.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart was Hulu's third most watched program. It and the other shows will remain on Hulu's service until next Tuesday, March 9 at 11:59pm.
