Liongsate and the IMAX Corporation announced Thursday that the studio’s film adaptation of The Hunger Games will be released to IMAX theaters for a limited, one-week run.

In order for the film to get an IMAX release, Lionsgate and IMAX will create a digitally remastered version, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It will only be released in digital IMAX theaters across North America on March 23, the same day it reaches standard theaters.

In the announcement, Lionsgate’s Joe Drake said the news officially makes The Hunger Games’ release “...an epic event.” He also called IMAX, “...the ideal way for fans to experience this film for the first time." The Hunger Games will be one of the last films that Drake will handle the release of as the former executives of Summit Entertainment, which Lionsgate bought last month, will take over the company’s film division.

This is the first time Lionsgate will release a film in IMAX and the company’s chairman and president, Greg Foster, expressed excitement about the partnership. “We’re proud to kick off our relationship with Lionsgate around this highly anticipated film that will make a strong addition to our 2012 film slate,” he said in the announcement.

The film, based on the first book of Suzanne Collins’ popular book series, was adapted and directed by Gary Ross and was produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in collaboration with Jon Kilik. As Collider notes, it stars Jennifer Lawrence, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, John Hutcherson and Lenny Kravitz.
