Idol "Almost a Chore to Watch"

Nolan Maloney
Good singers with dull personalities make for boring TV.

As this year's season of Idol draws to a close, fans are left to reflect on . . . well, nothing much to speak of.

"This year, honestly, I'm so sick of the show," says Dave Della Terza, long-time critic and creator of votefortheworst.com. "In past years people would ask, 'Do you hate American Idol?' I'd say it's fun to make fun of, it's so bad. [But] it's almost a chore to watch at this point."

The ratings seem to echo similar discontent, with viewership down 8 percent from the 31 million viewers who watched last year. Analysts suggest that it's not the lack of talent in the participants-it's a lack of personality.

"What do you really know about David Cook?" asked Terza. "[And] all you really know about David Archuleta is his dad is annoying. I think that's why Sanjaya was so successful. Every week, he was coming out and showing personality. He flourished in a crowd of people who didn't have personalities."

Plus, with a song listing that isn't terribly modern, Idol threatens to lose younger viewers. The current median age of the average Idol viewer is 42-how many of the participants are even that age?

David v. David goes down Wednesday.
