Idol Gives Back Declines in Ratings
American Idol's 2nd annual televised charity special, "Idol Gives Back" witnessed a sharp decline in ratings from its debut last year, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Despite this season's line-up of all-star performances by Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood, Rihanna, Fergie and the "scheduled" appearances by all three presidential candidates, viewership for the program decreased 34% among adults.
Fox executives note that last year's event was advertised as a regular "Idol" result show even though viewers who tuned in were surprised to discover "Gives Back" unfolding. This time around viewers were aware of the programming.
According to Billboard, "Idol Gives Back" still managed to raise at least $22 million thanks in part to a combination of corporate sponsors and viewer donations. The final number will be released Thursday, as "Idol" hopes to surpass it's mark of $76 million raised in 2007.
