‘Immortals’ and ‘Jack and Jill’ hope to top ‘Puss in Boots’ at the box office this weekend

Three big films open up this Veterans Day weekend, Immortals, Jack and Jill with Adam Sandler and Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar with Leonardo DiCaprio. All are hoping to overtake Puss in Boots, which has sat comfortably at the top of the box office for the past two weeks.

The Hollywood Reporter is predicting a close race between Immortals and Jack and Jill, with both making between $20 million and $25 million. However, The Associated Press predicts that Immortals could take the top spot alone with as much as $30 million.

Immortals was directed by Tarsem Singh and cost Relativity Media around $75 million to make. It stars Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in the upcoming Man of Steel, Freida Pinto, Stephen Dorff, Isabel Lucas, Kellan Lutz and Luke Evans.

Jack and Jill has not exactly been critically praised, but because it is Sandler, Sony expects the $80 million film to do well. Since it is only rated PG, it also qualifies as family-friendly fare.

Between those two releases should be Puss in Boots, which has already made $80.9 million in the U.S. and could move well past $100 million by the end of the weekend. It could reach the low-to-mid $20 million range, although Entertainment Weekly actually predicts that it will reach the top for the third straight week with $26 million.

Behind those three could be Eddie Murphy’s Tower Heist, which has gained attention thanks to Brett Ratner’s comments that caused both Murphy and Ratner to drop out of the Oscars. The film hasn’t been doing as well as Murphy would hope, only making $24.1 million on its opening weekend. It could make around $15 million.

J. Edgar has received mixed reviews overall, which could hurt its chances. Still, it is predicted to make at least $13 million. On Thursday, it was reported that the film already made $53,000 in limited release on Wednesday.
