'Inglourious Basterds' on Track for Big Weekend
Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt, earned an estimated $14.3 million on its opening day, Friday, in the United States and Canada.
If the Weinstein Co. and Universal war movie follows in the footsteps of other male-oriented blockbusters this summer, it will most likely surpass the popular $30 million mark, earning $37 million or $38 million by the end of the weekend. With those numbers, the film will probably end up at the top of the box office this weekend.
Coming in second on Friday was "District 9." The suprise No. 1 movie last weekend earned $5.5 million on Friday, a 61 percent decline from its debut last Friday.
"G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" landed in third place, Friday, grossing $3.6 million. The film has now earned more than $111 million.
On the other hand, Warner Bros. might be in a bit of trouble with its new female-oriented film. "The Time Traveler's Wife" dropped 57 percent this Friday, grossing only $3.3 million. It earned only $18.6 million on its opening weekend.
