Erika Jayne has made a name for herself as a singer, with hits like "Rollercoaster," "Stars" and her most recent single, “One Hot Pleasure.” TheCelebrityCafe.com’s Ellen Stodola spoke to her about her career, her musical style, and her upcoming live performances.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: How did you get involved with music?
Erika Jayne: When I was growing up as a kid, I was always entertaining. I was fortunate enough to get involved with a local musical theater and attend a performing arts high school.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: What made you want to move to Los Angeles to pursue a music career?
Erika Jayne: Well, I don’t know anybody who doesn’t think about moving to Los Angeles at one point or another. It just seemed like the right choice since I wanted to pursue music.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: Your music is often described as “electronic” or “club” music. Why did you choose to make this type of music in particular?
Erika Jayne: I’ve always liked club music. I always saw myself as more of a dance/pop music artist. I’ve always loved going to clubs and watching people dance, and I just like to create music for this environment.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: What makes your music stand out from anything else that’s out now?
Erika Jayne: I think that it really depends on who you work with and also having a truthful approach to the music. My songs all express things that I would say and things that I feel keep it organic.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: You have one album and several hit singles that have earned success. Do you have any plans to work on a follow-up album?
Erika Jayne: I have the album Pretty Mess. But I’m also in the process of recording new material now for another album.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: You have a big show coming up in Las Vegas over Fourth of July weekend. Do you enjoy doing live performances [because] you find it more challenging than working in a studio?
Erika Jayne: They’re all great in their own way. One thing that I believe is that you can steal a song, but you can’t steal a show. I love doing tours and live shows, and I’ve gone pretty much everywhere to go in the United States. I recently performed Albuquerque and Detroit, which were two places that I’d never performed before, so it was great to go there.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: Most of your songs have several remix versions. What's it like to hear different variations of your music?
Erika Jayne: When you do remix packages, you’re always trying to hit certain audiences. Those remixes are really made to take you away.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: You’re performing at the Trevor’s Prom event. Tell me a bit about that. And what encourages you to be such an advocate for the gay pride cause?
Erika Jayne: I have gay family members and gay friends. I was also fortunate enough to be mentored by a lot of great gay people in my life. I had done a PSA for the Trevor Project before, and [that's why] I got involved with the event, Trevor’s Prom.
