It's the End of Working Days for "9 to 5" on Broadway
Dolly Parton's Broadway musical, "9 to 5," will close Sept. 6 after a five-month run, Reuters reports.
Producers made the announcement on Wednesday but would not comment on why the show was closing after 148 performances and 24 previews. It will, however, begin a national tour in late September.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the stage adaptation of the 1980 hit film failed to connect with critics and audiences alike. It also failed to win any of its Tony Award bids in June, including the "9 to 5" nominee for best song, the Oscar-nominated title tune written by Parton.
Allison Janney also lost for lead actress in a musical against Alice Ripley of "Next to Normal."
Despite its lack of success on Broadway, Parton is looking forward to the tour.
"I can't wait for this show to hit the road so people across the country can see why I'm so proud of everyone involved," she said. "And I'm so pleased that we'll be opening the tour in Nashville. Great things happen in Nashville."
