Jackson's Mother Temporarily Loses Control of Estate
Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine, lost control over her son's estate on Monday.
According to The Washington Post, a Los Angeles judge gave a lawyer and music industry executive temporary control of Jackson's estate.
Jackson named lawyer John Branca and music executive John McClain co-executors in his 2002 will. Jackson's $500 million estate was left to a trust for his three children, Katherine and charities.
The New York Times reports that the will included a third co-executor, Barry Siegel, but he stepped down from the position in 2003. Jackson apparently gave full power over his financial matters to Branca and McClain. Branca assisted Jackson with a 50 percent stake in the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalog.
The judge is giving the co-executors temporary control over the estate until August 3 before finalizing control and determining if there is any other will under Jackson's name. Meanwhile, Katherine risks losing 40 percent in assets Jackson bequeathed to her if she contests the will.
