Jada Pinkett Smith Breaks Down at Luncheon

The actress became overwhelmed by her father's sudden passing.

Queen Latifah is a friend that will offer you a shoulder to cry on – literally. Jada Pinkett Smith became overwhelmed by her father’s death while presenting an award to Latifah, People magazine reports.

Smith was honoring Latifah with the Power Award at the third annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon Thursday, People reports. Smith’s father died recently from a heart attack.

According to People, Smith began by saying:

“My father died last week, and I’m flying tomorrow to bury him,” Smith announced. "But I wanted to come because when those types of losses happen a lot of things get illuminated and your priorities fall in line.”

Smith continued, “When I think about Latifah, I think about a woman who makes me feel loved. She can sit in the throne of my soul and just be there with me. She makes me laugh.”

At this point Smith stopped because she was too choked up to resume but then Latifah stood next to her on stage for support.

And that’s what friends are for.
