A New York country sheriff had the privilege of being sworn in by the voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa Thursday.
Actor James Earl Jones performed the swearing in of Dutchess County, NY Sheriff Adrian "Butch" Anderson, a longtime friend and neighbor of the Field of Dreams actor who lives in the county, according to The Associated Press.
Jones was able to perform the ceremony even though he is not a judge, although he told the audience that his acting experience prepared him for it. “I did play a judge in a movie called Somersby. It starred Richard Gere and Jodie Foster. It was set in post Civil War and I played a judge who functioned during the reconstruction in a southern state,” he told the crowd, according to the Mid Hudson News.
The AP notes that Anderson was sworn in for his fourth term.
The Mid Hudson News reports that during the ceremony, Anderson said that he likes having the job because of the nice people he meets. “That’s what’s nice about being the sheriff of Dutchess County because there are so many good people out there and the good outweigh the bad,” he said.
Jones, who was given an honorary Academy Award this year, gave his distinctive voice to the character of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars films, as well as the final prequel. He also voiced Mufasa, Simba’s father, in Disney’s The Lion King.
