Jane Fonda returns to Broadway after 46 years

Seasoned actress and political activist stars in "33 Variations."

Actress Jane Fonda made her first Broadway appearance in over four decades on Monday, Yahoo reports. She stars as a musicologist obsessed with Beethoven in "33 Variations," a new play written and directed by Moises Kaufman.

The play tells the story of Ludwig van Beethoven and his fascination with a waltz. A dying academic, played by Fonda, is just as fascinated by Beethoven's interest 200 years later. At the same time, she has to come to terms with the relationship with her daughter and her own mortality.

The 71-year-old Fonda rose to movie stardom with her role as "Barbarella" in 1968, and later won Oscars for both her performances on "Klute" and "Coming Home." She has also become famous for her political activism. Fonda made her Broadway debut in "There Was a Little Girl" and last appeared on stage in "Strange Interlude" in 1963, 64 years ago.
