Jane Fonda to Star in Broadway Play
Jane Fonda will headline Moises Kaufman's 33 Variations next spring, marking her return to Broadway after more than 40 years of absence.
Opening at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on March 9, 33 Variations will enjoy a 15-week run ending on May 24. Preview performances will begin on February 9.
The play follows Katherine Brandt (Fonda), a musicologist who is trying to solve the riddle of Beethoven's obsession with a particular piece of music.
Fonda last appeared on Broadway in 1963 in a revival of the Eugene O'Neill drama, Strange Interlude. Her most recent work in film was the 2007 flop, Georgia Rule.
Kaufman will direct the play. Though this is his Broadway debut as a playwright, he previously directed the Tony Award-winning I Am My Own Wife. He also directed the film adaptation of his book, The Laramie Project, for HBO. He received two Emmy nominations for his work on the adaptation.
Tickets for 33 Variations go on sale to the general public on December 26.
