Jay-Z's Done with Def Jam
After being part of the label for over a decade, hip-hop artist Jay-Z has officially left Def Jam Recordings. The rapper confirmed the news on Thursday afternoon, according to MTV.com.
Last spring, Jay-Z signed a new deal for future albums and tours with Live Nation, while still being tied to Def Jam for one more album under his contract, reported EW.com.
The rapper started his own record company called Roc Nation and has been working on the new album, The Blueprint 3, with Kanye West since last year. However, he bought out his contract with Def Jam, allowing him to release the new album through his own company, according to EW.com.
Jay-Z even served as Def Jam's President. According to the New York Times, the hip- hop artist bowed out of this position in 2007 when he had a contractual disagreement with Universal Music Group, Def Jam's parent company.
