J.D. Salinger Sues Over "Catcher in the Rye" Sequel
J.D. Salinger is asking a judge to block the publication of "60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye," saying the work infringes on his copyright.
"The sequel is not a parody and it does not comment upon or criticize the original. It is a rip-off pure and simple," said the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan on Monday (June 1).The author of the sequel identifies himself as J.D. California.
According to Amazon.com, the book is set to be published in September by Swedish publisher Nicotext.
Salinger holds a copyright to "Catcher in the Rye," hailed as one of the great works of American literature and its main character, Holden Caufield. The lawsuit describes Salinger as "fiercely protective of his intellectual property" and that he "would not approve of defendants' use of his intellectual property."
